Life and death in someone else's hands

by Renegadeparent 22. February 2009 21:38

Two things have really been bothering me this week:

  1. The knowledge that someone other than me believes they should be able to dictate the number of children it is acceptable for me to give birth to, in accordance with their own arbitrary and subjective measure (in this case, environmental impact).
  2. The knowledge that someone other than me believes they should be able to decide whether or not it is acceptable for me to end my life, in accordance with their own beliefs as to the value and sanctity of human life.

Life and death - it’s the most significant spectrum anyone could possibly assume the moral high ground on. If someone else makes decisions on your behalf in this domain, regardless of any derivative rights or entitlements you might lay claim to, you can never consider yourself in the least bit free.

Libertarian and heretic. Parent, partner and entrepreneur. Embracing autonomous learning. Leading not following. Challenging the status quo.

I do agree with being kind, considerate and generous to others.

I don't agree with compulsion, coercion or unnecessary intervention in any aspect of life - that goes for education and childbirth too.

I value autonomy, personal responsibility and informed choice.

I really am all for the freedom - are you?
