More on just saying no

Having reached my line in the sand, I am at a loss as to what to write here at the moment with regard to the ongoing detail of Home Education Review. I've only ever seen it as part of a widespread attack on the civil liberties of families, and for my purposes, that post is as clear as it gets - if those questions aren't answered, I will either be unable to guarantee our co-operation with the legislation, or I will leave the country sooner than I had originally planned. Particularly because, as parents of under 5s, I strongly believe we will be next.

I have almost finished fisking the Impact Assessment, but I can't bring myself to publish it. It's so absurd I feel like Alice in Wonderland every time I look at it (although if anyone wants it in a Word document with changes tracked, just email me and I'll send it over. There's not much swearing, considering).

I actually can't face going through Clause 26 with a similarly fine-toothed comb at the moment, because it's just more of the same. Other diligent people are getting stuck in, and I agree with those individuals who choose not to be put off by DCSF lurkers going through the lists and the blogs. Perhaps they will learn something. In any case, they are not privy to the discussions and plans of private local and online friendships, groups and networks that exist already. Those relationships will, I suspect, continue to grow and flourish - particularly if any draconian legislation is enacted. There's always a way.

I chose not to sign the parliamentary petition as I didn't personally feel comfortable with the wording - although I can see potential benefits in the media coverage it is generating. I did sign this petition because I agree with the sentiment enshrined within it. Sadly, I don't expect that it will make a jot of difference.

The Ofsted nonsense is just that; I can't see the point of engaging with something that is as irrelevant to home education as the British Dental Association is to hoteliers. I also predict a whole bunch of pitfalls in doing so, as do these good people.

This pretty much sums up my feelings toward the APPG, thanks to AHEd.

So, what next? Well I am busying myself with many of the activities I signed up to here some time ago. I am also savouring the time spent in the real world with my gorgeous family and supportive friends, who I cannot afford to lose sight of. My baby already has his first tooth! Writing my new blog is helping me record the good bits, wax lyrical about my personal preferences, and rant only occasionally to let off steam. Renegade Parent isn't going anywhere anytime soon and it might be time to start scrutinising the wider machinations of the DCSF and beyond. Just in case you thought I was putting my feet up in the quiet times, we've also been publishing for the iPhone - our first game was released the week before last and we have several more in the pipeline. Of course, making good games also involves playing them - for research purposes, you understand...

I guess what I am saying is that I am now discovering plenty of other ways to say NO, and there are plenty of people who are doing the same already.
